THE NEW FACES OF THE HOMELESS

While driving to work or going to the store, how many homeless people have you passed? How could you tell they were homeless? Chances are they either had a cup or sign asking for change. Some of these individuals may have dressed in dirty clothing and had not taken a shower in days. I'm sure you have seen many cars just pass them by and people either making fun or ignoring them altogether. However, what if you were to find out that the nicely dressed family walking in the mall or through the local grocery store was also homeless. Do you think they would receive the same reaction if people were to know their secret? The truth is that many people carry a hidden prejudice against the homeless. The stereotypes come to mind whenever someone is asked to describe a homeless person. With the decline in jobs and hard hitting recession the way we describe those in this tragic situation has completely changed. Many people are losing their homes to foreclosure and without work are forced to live in "Tent Cities". The new faces of the homeless look just like you and I. With this "new look" people are finally taking a larger step towards fighting against the homeless epidemic. Although it's wonderful to know the effort has increased, what does it say about us as a society? It's only after we see the well dressed homeless person that we care. But imagine for a minute there was a camera recording the life of that "stereotype", how was he/she prior? At what point did he/she loose all hope? How does he/she feel knowing society has turned it's back? I bring this up because when these "stereotypes" became homeless they did not look as they do now. Instead, they more than likely looked just as our new homeless families look today. The difference is when they first became homeless there weren't as many organizations and programs to help them. Therefore, after time they turned to substance abuse as a way to escape their reality. Of course, there other reasons too not just this scenario but nevertheless, these were and still are people who have been hurting. Shouldn't we still consider the "stereotype" equally important or is it because they have lost all hope that we can turn a blind eye? I asked this question to several people and the answer I got was, "well if they were to clean themselves up, shave, get into a shelter, and buy a decent outfit instead of getting drunk then someone may just help them". My response was, " well, don't you think they need the help first in order to get cleaned up, shave, get shelter, and buy an outfit in order to move forward? You can't expect a person who's lost himself and lost all hope to suddenly have faith in the same society that drove passed them, made fun of them, and ignored them for years."To send "Realm" your thoughts click here.
